WALCOTT, N.D. (AP)--A farm couple living along the Sheyenne River say they're holding their own against floodwaters after refusing to evacuate.
Kent and Jan Lahren have a cattle operation west of Walcott. They say the National Guard, friends and relatives helped them save their farm home. Water was only a foot from the home when a dike went up.
The Lahrens say most of their cattle were moved before water turned their farm into an island. Calving heifers, a few sheep dogs and cats remain with them on high ground.
Jan Lahren says authorities tried to get them to evacuate April 18, but they refused. Most of their farm buildings are under water, but the dike has been holding and the pumps are working.
