U.S. congressman: Texas AgriLife Blackland center 'quietly enhancing America'Texas Recognized for his support of some indispensable programs at Fort Hood, U.S. Rep. John Carter turned the praise toward the programs' coordinators at the Texas AgriLife Blackland Research and Extension Center at Temple during a recent visit to the facility. "What you do here is quietly enhancing America," said Carter, 31st Congressional District representative, Round Rock. Carter, on a two-week congressional recess, was praised April 6 during a reception in his honor held at the center in Temple. The event was "presented in appreciation for support of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and Texas AgriLife Research programs conducted in cooperation with military partners at Fort Hood and with the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Agricultural Research Service and USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service," said Dr. Bill Dugas, the interim director of AgriLife Research. Carter offered thanks and lauded AgriLife programs that help Fort Hood, specifically 4-H military partnerships for youth and their families, erosion reduction, water quality and revegetation, endangered species management and a flood alert system at a stream crossing. Military training at Fort Hood has been enhanced by the programs that improve the base's environment, Carter said. "The soldiers go into harm's way so you and I can go to the ballgame on Friday night," he said. "We owe it to them to provide the best possible training conditions that we can." The event was attended by top administrators from AgriLife Research and AgriLife Extension from College Station. Participants also included several elected officials from the area who also thanked Carter for supporting the programs. "I commend you for the research you do here and the work that you do at Fort Hood," Carter said in closing.
