Go on harvest with us

By Holly Martin

When I was young, one of the most exciting times on our farm was wheat harvest. It was almost like it was its own separate season: fall, winter, spring, summer and wheat harvest.

It brings back a flood of memories to me. I remember the Co-op magnetic clasp holding scale tickets fluttering in the wind from the open window of the old trucks that hauled the wheat to town. I remember the shiny stainless steel insulated bowl with penguins on the side that my mom used to take cold salad side dishes to the field. And I remember celebrating Father's Day with a fried chicken dinner on the tailgate.

As I got older, I became aware of the long hours my dad worked and the stress brought on by breakdowns. I knew when it rained uncontrollably the week before harvest that it meant the Graham ground would be flooded. And I could appreciate the beauty of a field of high-yielding wheat rustling in the wind. In high school, both my sister and I spent summers working at the local Co-op, weighing trucks and probing the load as it came across the scale.

Wheat harvest is just one of those things that is unique to agriculture. This summer you will have a chance to experience wheat harvest through the eyes of two young women who have known no other way of life than spending the summer as a part of a custom wheat harvesting crew. Jenna Zeorian and Jada Bulgin will share their life with you on the wheat harvest trail. You can meet Jenna this week on Page 1-B and look forward to meeting Jada next week.

Jenna and Jada will talk about the ordinary wheat harvest issues like yields, quality, disease, and weed pressure. But they will also share their lives with you. We hope that you get to know Jenna and Jada and their families. We want you to meet the farmers they work with and the people they encounter along the way. In addition, we will be incorporating reports from farmers across our coverage area, so you will know what's happening in all corners of the wheat harvesting world.

Each week in the Journal, we'll bring you an update from the correspondents, sharing the latest information about wheat harvest as it progresses north.

We intend for this coverage to be interactive. More than just bringing you the updates in the Journal each week, we want you to follow along daily on www.allaboardharvest.com. Jenna and Jada will be posting often. They know you'll be able to relate when the combine breaks down and it takes three trips to town to get it fixed.

In addition to the website, you can sign up for daily e-mail updates or follow on Twitter and Facebook. See the details about how you can follow the All Aboard Wheat Harvest crews on Page 1-B.

We hope it is the perfect combination of useful information for wheat producers and enjoyable reading.
