4-H and FFA: Biggest pumpkin contest to be held at state fair

This year the Oklahoma Vegetable Association will sponsor a giant pumpkin contest at the Oklahoma State Fair. The contest is open to both 4-Her, ages 9 to 19, and FFA members and is being double listed in both the 4-H and FFA Sections of the Fair Catalog. 4-H and FFA members will compete for a single set of awards. OVA will manage the pumpkin weigh-in and the weigh in will be Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Hobbies, Arts & Craft Building (4-H Exhibit Area).

In order for a pumpkin to be ready for the state fair in September, seeds need to be planted in mid-May. Dill's Atlantic Giant, a giant pumpkin variety, might be used for the competition. Growing giant pumpkins is somewhat different than growing the smaller pumpkins and your OSU Extension office will have information pertaining to both the giant and regular size pumpkins.

The giant pumpkin contest will be listed in the 4-H section 4132, Class 32. The requirements are:

--One pumpkin, of any variety, or pumpkin type squash;

--Entry limited to Oklahoma FFA and 4-H members only;

--The submitted pumpkin must have been grown in Oklahoma by a 4-H or FFA member;

--The pumpkin must be free of damage that would limit storage and exhibition (should be intact, without lesions, cuts or open wounds);

--The pumpkins will be weighted to determine the heaviest;

--Three monetary awards will be given by OVA to the heaviest pumpkins: 1st--$100 and Trophy; 2nd--$50 and Trophy; 3rd--$25 and Trophy.

--OVA will supervise the weighing and select those retained for exhibition during the fair, all others will be sent home;

--Weigh in will be Sept. 10, 2009 at 10 a.m., at the Oklahoma State Fair MIO#3 Building.

If you have any further questions, please contact your local Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Office. In Cleveland County, the number to call is 405-321-4774.
