Star Lake Cattle Ranch wins 10 in a row

Sandhill Farms continue winning tradition

Excitement was at an all-time high in the Denver Yards for the crew from Star Lake Cattle Ranch, Skiatook Okla., as they proudly exhibited the champion carload for the 10th consecutive year at the National Western Stock Show Jan. 15.

Mrnak Herefords, Bowman, N.D., showed the reserve champion carload. Sandhill Farms, Haviland, Kan., showed the champion pen of three bulls and Delaney Herefords Inc., Lake Benton, Minn., showed the reserve champion pen. In the heifer division it was Baumgarten Cattle Co., Belfield, N.D., leading the champion pen of three and Greives Herefords, Otterbein, Ind., showing the reserve champion pen of heifers.

Herefords boasted the most cattle of any breed exhibited at the NWSS. There were more than 640 Herefords competing, including 475 entries on the Hill in the open and junior shows along with six loads, 30 bull pens and seven heifer pens in the Yards.

Rance Long, Big Cabin, Okla.; Jeff Gooden, Iberia, Mo.; and Joe Bennett, Connell, Wash., teamed up to evaluate the Yard shows.

Star Lake Cattle Ranch's champion carload of junior bull calves topped the scales at an average weight of 1,330 lb., and a weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.70. The group was sired by KCF Bennett 3008 M326; Remitall Online 122L; STAR 12G Palliadin 115N and STAR Bright Future 533P ET. On show day the group posted average expected progeny differences (EPDs) of birth weight (BW) 3.8; weaning weight (WW) 54; yearling weight (YW) 90; milk (MM) 17; and milk and growth (M&G) 44 and a scrotal measurement of 36.8 cm.

Reserve grand champion carload honors went to the spring carload of calves exhibited by Mrnak Herefords. The group was sired by MH Monument 3147; MH Rambo 279R; MH Dakota 0230; and H5 361 Advance 504. The average weight of the load was 1,076 lb. and they calculated a WDA of 3.65. The average EPDs of the group was BW 4.9; WW 60; YW 100; MM 20 and M&G 50. They measured an average scrotal measurement of 34 cm.

Sandhill Farms returned to the champion spotlight in the 2009 pen show, having captured grand or reserve the last four years. The group of bull calves sired by SHF Rib Eye M326 R117 averaged 1,167 lb. with a 3.49 WDA. The bulls had average EPDs of BW 3.3; WW 56; YW 91; MM 17 and M&G 45.

Delaney Herefords Inc. showed the reserve champion pen sired by TCW Red Obsidian M326 412R and KJ 2403 Recruit 966R. The bulls averaged 1,140 lb., with a 3.41 WDA and an average scrotal measurement of 36.8 cm. The average EPDs of the group was BW 4.6; WW 52; YW 80; MM 21 and M&G 47.

The grand and junior calf champion pen of females exhibited by Baumgarten Cattle Co. was sired by KB L1 Domino 655 ET and BCC Mario 646. The group posted average EPDs of BW 2.5; WW 45; YW 76; MM 26 and M&G 48. Greives Herefords showed the reserve champion pen of three females. The junior heifer calves were sired by SHF Radar M326 R125. The group posted EPDs of BW 3.3; WW 50; YW 79; MM 17 and M&G 42.
