MFU commends Vilsack on COOL standardsMissouri Missouri Farmers Union President Russ Kremer applauded U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack Feb. 24 for his announcement that he has asked meatpackers to meet Congressional intent when labeling their products. "Secretary Vilsack has taken this important step to ensuring that consumers know where their food comes from," Kremer said. "Country-of-origin labeling is meaningless unless it truly identifies where the product is coming from." Following passage of mandatory COOL in the 2008 farm bill, the Bush administration wrote labeling rules which would allow meatpackers to label products as "country of multiple origin" rather than specifically identifying which country. "American consumers and farmers have waited too long for COOL to be implemented and we intend for it to be meaningful," Kremer said.
