Jason Thompson earns Bronze and Silver pinsMissouri Jason Thompson, Mount Vernon, Mo., has earned the National Junior Angus Association's Bronze and Silver Awards, according to Robin Ruff, junior activities director of the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Mo. A member of the NJAA since 2004, Jason is also an active member of the Missouri Junior Angus Association. He has shown his cattle at several local, state and national shows as well as competed successfully in state showmanship competitions. At the National Junior Angus Show, Jason has participated in the photography, poster, writing, livestock judging, team fitting and quiz bowl contests as well as the mentoring program. Jason has been building his herd of registered Angus cattle over the past few years with purchases from local breeders and in nearby Oklahoma. In 2008, Jason completed Graham's School of AI and received the highest placing junior in the state livestock judging contest. The 14-year-old son of Greg and Cindy Thompson attends Mount Vernon Middle School. The Bronze and Silver Awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards and then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle. The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for nearly 7,000 active members nationwide.
