Wheat disease, insect meeting scheduled for March 31 in MiamiTexas Disease and insects can be detrimental to wheat in this key growth period. Area producers can find out how to stay on top of these pests to mitigate losses at the "Wheat Disease and Insect Meeting" on March 31 in Miami. "It is critical to stay on top of wheat diseases and insects this time of year," said Brandon Dukes, Texas AgriLife Extension Service agricultural and natural resources agent in Roberts County. "Come join us for a meeting aimed at informing you of potential disease and insect issues, steps for controlling these pests, and preventing damage from insects and diseases in the future," Dukes said. The meeting will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., at the Miami Community Center. Two continuing education units will be offered, one in integrated pest management and one general. Dr. Brent Bean, AgriLife Extension agronomist in Amarillo, will tell producers how to maximize wheat grain and forage production. Dr. Ron French, AgriLife Extension plant pathologist in Amarillo, will talk about the latest disease outbreaks, prevention and control. Dukes will talk about the latest insect outbreaks, including greenbugs and Russian wheat aphids. Registration is free, but producers are asked to RSVP on or before March 24 so that lunch preparations can be made, Dukes said.
