SD Stockgrowers thank Herseth for FMD prevention legislation

South Dakota

The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association is pleased that Representative Herseth Sandlin, D-SD, has again introduced legislation in an effort to prevent the importation of meat or livestock from Argentina, a country known to harbor foot-and-mouth disease.

According to SDSGA President Larry Nelson, Buffalo, S.D., Herseth Sandlin introduced similar legislation last year and he is glad to learn that she is continuing the battle, along with Representative Lummis, R-WY.

"We know that FMD has been one of the most devastating diseases on the planet and we are fortunate to have some common sense representatives out here in 'cow country' who are willing to stand up to USDA," said Nelson. He said USDA continues to consider importing from certain regions of Argentina that they consider "FMD Free." He believes this puts the U.S. cow herd at great risk. "Either a country is free from a disease or it isn't. We shouldn't even consider importing meat or livestock from any part of a country that is infected with any serious disease, especially one as contagious and destructive as FMD. It is so much easier and safer to prevent disease introduction than to try and deal with it once it is here."

The Stockgrowers hope producers from other states will contact their representatives and urge their support for the Foot and Mouth Disease Prevention Act of 2009 introduced by Herseth Sandlin and Lummis.
