Grain Sorghum Board directorships open for appointment

Two directorships to the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Development, Utilization and Marketing Board are open for appointment by Governor Dave Heineman this July.

The filing deadline for appointment to the Grain Sorghum Board is 5 p.m., June 3. Vacancies open for Governor-appointment include:

District #4: includes the counties of Clay, Fillmore, Hamilton, York, and Seward;

District #5: includes the counties of Buffalo, Hall, Merrick, Polk, Butler, Saunders, Sarpy, Douglas, Platte, Colfax, Dodge, Washington, Burt, Cuming, Stanton, Madison, Boone, Nance, Howard, Greeley, Sherman, Valley, Custer, Blaine, Loup, Garfield, Wheeler, Antelope, Pierce, Wayne, Thurston, Dakota, Dixon, Cedar, Knox, Holt, Boyd, Rock, Brown, and Keya Paha. (Currently held by Lynn Belitz of Fullerton, who is seeking reappointment.)

Any grain sorghum producer interested in appointment may place his or her name on the candidacy list for the respective districts by filing a petition with the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board. Qualified individuals residing in the above-named counties will be eligible.

Qualified candidates include those who are citizens of Nebraska, are 21 years of age, have been actually engaged in growing sorghum in Nebraska for a period of at least five years, and derive a substantial portion of their income from growing grain sorghum.

A candidacy petition must carry the signature of at least 50 resident-growers of the district for which the candidate is applying. Petitions can be obtained by writing the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board, P.O. Box 94982, Lincoln, NE 68509; PH: 402-471-4276; or e-mail: sorghum.board@nebraska.gov .

The Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board administers the one cent per hundredweight checkoff on sorghum sold in the state. The board's funds are invested in programs of market development, research, education and federal legislation representation.
