Staples honors farmers, ranchers during National Agriculture WeekCommissioner celebrates a changing agricultural industry Texas With the American agriculture industry more productive and efficient than ever before, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples salutes Texas' hardworking farmers and ranchers who contribute to the state's economy during National Agriculture Week, March 15 to 21. Today, each American farmer feeds on average more than 144 people. In 1960, the average farmer fed 46 people. "I am proud to honor our Texas farmers and ranchers," Commissioner Staples said. "Something we often overlook is the role agriculture producers play in our national and global economies. For example, in Texas the economic impact of agriculture exceeds $100 billion. This industry is part of the foundation of our economy, and farmers and ranchers are working hard to stimulate the economy during these challenging times." Today, more than 22 million people work in our nation's agriculture industry. This includes careers in everything from food chemistry to banking to commodity trading. And the job descriptions of tomorrow's agriculture professionals may look quite different due to advances in farming technology and the broad opportunities that extend far beyond the field. "National Ag Week is an occasion to acknowledge the increasing importance of agriculture in today's world," Commissioner Staples said. "This is an industry that is a powerhouse of production, and I believe the cornerstone of our economic success in this country."
