2009 NWSS National Salers and Optimizer Show

The American Salers Association had a weekend packed full of events at the 2009 National Western Stock Show Jan. 17 to 19. The weekend kicked off with the National Salers Futurity Bull Show Jan. 18. The Futurity consists of Salers breeders who annually buy a membership to the Futurity. The show features the breed's best young sires. This year breeders voted MAC Union Station 87U as the 2009 Futurity champion. He is a February 2008, black, polled, purebred son of Big Sky Triton 40R, owned by MacDonald Ranches, Bismarck, N.D. There was one Futurity member to have their name drawn to win sale proceeds from the sale of the Futurity Champion Bull. Mike Harris of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., was the lucky breeder holding the last card.

The Salers & Optimizer Pen Bull Show began Jan. 18. The three judge panel consisted of Todd Herman, Skiatook, Okla., Steve Patton, Frankfort, Ind., and Jim Wilson, Thermopolis, Wyo. They began their evaluation of some top quality purebred and Optimizer cattle in the Stockyards Arena. The grand champion pen of Salers bulls went to GG&T Land & Cattle Co. of Quinter, Kan., with an entry consisting of three January 2008 calves; GGT P Bk Enforcer 300U, a GGT P Blk Predator 223N son; GGT P Bk Impact 203U, a AP Polled Genesis XZ64F son; and GGT P Bk Triumph 32U, another GGT P Blk Predator 223N son. The pen had an average weight of 1,228 pounds, an average WDA of 3.39 pounds, and an average REA/CWT of 1.47.

GG&T also had the reserve champion pen of Salers bulls with an entry consisting of three more January 2008 calves; GGT Double O Seven 211U, another GGT P Blk Predator 223N son; GGT Apache155U, a AP Polled Genesis XZ64F son; and GGT P Bk Remedy 19U, a GGT P Heavy Duty 100J son. The pen had an average weight of 1,270 pounds, an average WDA of 3.42 pounds, and an average REA/CWT of 1.30.

MacDonald Ranches of Bismarck, N.D., had the Grand Champion Pen of Optimizer Bulls. The pen consisted of three bulls born in February and March of 2008; MAC F1 Underpass 136U, sired by Mytty in Focus; MAC F1 University 61U, also sired by Mytty in Focus; and MAC F1 Upstream 139U, sired by SAV 004 Density 4336. Their combined average weight was 1,155 pounds, average WDA of 3.55, and average REA/CWT of 1.25.

The National Salers & Optimizer Show was held Jan. 19. The show kicked off with the Junior Salers show where Garrett Miller of Kiowa, Colo., judged the high quality females. Lane Nolting, Stover, Mo., had the grand champion junior heifer in the Junior Show. The winning heifer was KKCC Pld Ruby 754T, a March 2007 daughter of DJF Navjo 93N. Mandy Moses, Davenport, Iowa, received the reserve champion junior heifer with LMB Tira 11T, a February 2007 heifer, sired by TSB Dragon 15P.

In the Optimizer Division of the Junior Show, Miller selected KKCC BP Sonora 781T for owner Kylee Kohls, Litchfield, Minn. Sonora is a September 2007 born daughter of KKCC Mercury 416P. Earning the reserve champion junior Optimizer heifer was KKCC BP Whoopie 755T for owner Lexie Nolting, Stover, Mo. Whoopie is a March 2007 born daughter of DJF Navajo 93N.

Wes Hudson, Harrison, Ark., judged the Open Salers and Optimizer shows following the Junior Show. Wes noted, "The Salers breed is one of the unique breeds that can offer calving ease, maternal characteristics and is one of the soundest breeds he has ever been associated with." In selecting the champion female he complimented the phenomenal set of females and noted this is a truly great breed of cattle.

The Open Show began with the Optimizer division for the heifers. Wes Hudson selected DWB School Girl 816U as the grand champion Optimizer heifer for White's Hypoint Salers, Lancaster, Wis. School Girl is a March 4, 2008 born daughter of G C C Old School 4709. GGT P BK Knockout 383U was selected as the reserve champion Optimizer heifer for GG &T Cattle Co., Quinter, Kan. She is a February 21, 2008 born daughter of GGT P Blk Heavy Hitter.

In the Optimizer Bull Show White's Hypoint Salers also had the grand champion Optimizer bull with DWB Ultimate 33U. He is a March 2008 son of DWB Network 8N. Reserve grand champion Optimizer bull went to Triple C Farms with ETC Blk Playboy 881U. He is a January 2008 born son of GGT P Blk Banshee 154N.

In the Salers female show JCGC Two Timin'770T was named grand champion heifer for owners Colmore Farms, Rising Fawn, Ga. and That Farm, Camp Ark. She is a January 2007 heifer, sired by JGK Bouncer, and was earlier named senior champion heifer. Reserve grand champion heifer went to Breanna Duncan, Marlow, Okla. with 3D Ebony Velvet. She is a March 2008 female, sired by 3D Pld Blk Power On, and was earlier named spring heifer calf champion.

Moving onto the bulls, Hudson selected H & S Tonka, a June 2007 born son of H & S Mac. Tonka is owned by H & S Farms, Baltimore, Ohio, Maze Farms, Goreville, Ill., and Sunken Canyon Ranch, Buhl, Idaho. Tonka was earlier named the junior champion bull. The reserve grand champion bull title was awarded to GGT P Bk Backlash 170U for owner GG & T Land and Cattle Co., Quinter, Kan. Backlash is a January 2008 born son of AP Polled Genesis XZ64F and was earlier named junior bull calf champion.

Junior Get of Sire went to Breanna Duncan with the progeny of 3D Power On.

Get of Sire went to H & S Farms on the progeny of H & S Mac.

Produce of Dam went to Breanna Duncan with the progeny of GGT Pld Velvet.

Best of Five Head went to Breanna Duncan.

Premier Breeder and Exhibitor titles were both awarded to Breanna Duncan.

ASA Herdsman of the Year went to Marcy Love with H&S Farms, Baltimore, Ohio.
