2009 American Salers Association Foundation Scholarship winnersThe American Salers Association awards scholarships annually to members of the American Salers Junior Association. Selection of winners is based on academic record, demonstrated leadership experience and Salers cattle involvement. Applicants must be at least a high school senior and have been a member or ASJA for a minimum of two years. Scholarship funds are used to further the recipients' education in fields of their choice. The following scholarship awards were presented at the ASA Annual Meeting and Banquet held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., on Jan. 17. Sarah Bush of Blairstown, Mo., a senior at Clinton High School, Clinton Mo., was awarded $1,000. Bush plans to attend the University of Missouri in pursuit of majors in animal science. Sarah is the daughter of Taylor and Suzanne Bush. Danelle Jo Woehl was awarded $1,000. Woehl is attending Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., and anticipates graduating in May 2009 with a master of agriculture degree in international agriculture. Danelle is the daughter of Henry and Connie Woehl of Douglas, Wyo. Ashley Collins, a senior at Westville High School, Westville, Okla., received $500 from a Hutchnson Western scholarship donation. Collins plans to pursue a career in pharmacy and will attend Oklahoma State University in the fall. Ashley is the daughter of Roger and Julie Collins of Westville, Okla. Cy McKim, a senior at Mitchell High School, Mitchell Neb., was awarded $500 from a Hutchnson Western scholarship donation and will apply this to studies at Western Nebraska Community College in pursuit of a degree in Psychology. Cy is the son of Dean and Jillane Peak. Casey Crow of Thompson, Mo., received a Frank Gamble scholarship award of $250. Crow is a senior at Centralia High School, Centralia, Mo., and will pursue a degree in Animal Science at Black Hawk College--East Campus, Galva, Ill. Crow is the daughter of J.T. and Christy Curtis of Thompson, Mo. The American Salers Association (www.salersusa.org), headquartered in Parker, Colo., is the breed's leadership voice that records, protects and promotes Salers cattle. The Salers breed leads the Continental beef industry in calving ease and marbling and ideally compliment American breeds.
