Tanner Rayl, Hutchinson, Kan., has earned the National Junior Angus Association's Bronze and Silver Awards, according to Robin Ruff, junior activities director of the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Mo. The 17-year-old son of Dennis and Shirley Rayl attends Buhler High School.
A member of the NJAA since 2003, Tanner is also an active member of the Kansas Junior Angus Association. He has shown his cattle at several local, state and national shows. He has attended the national and regional Leaders Engaged in Angus Development Conferences. At the National Junior Angus Show, Tanner has annually participated in several contests including photography, poster, writing, extemporaneous and prepared speaking, team fitting and quiz bowl as well as the All-American Certified Angus Beef Cook-off. Tanner has been building his herd of registered Angus cattle over the past few years with purchases from local breeders, and has consigned a female to the Kansas Angus Futurity sale.
The Bronze and Silver Awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards and then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.
The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for nearly 7,000 active members nationwide.
