New herbicides add to crop producers' flexibility"It's actually a pretty interesting time to be in weed science right now," said Extension Weed Science Educator Lowell Sandell. "New active ingredients and herbicides will provide more tools for crop producers." For corn, some new preemergents include Bayer's Balance Flexx to be used in up to V2 corn and Corvus. Kixor, coming out in the second half of 2009 from BASF, has both residual and foliar activity. Kixor's primary market will likely be preplant or preemergence in corn, but will also be labeled for use in sorghum, soybeans, small grains and woody crops. There are a few new postemergence products that will also make good tank mix partners in glyphosate tolerant corn. These include Cadet from FMC and Require Q and Resolve Q from Dupont. Many of the new products incorporate new safeners that help the corn metabolize the herbicide more quickly, so it does less damage to the crop. "It's always good to have more options for weed control in whatever crops we're growing," Sandell said. For the last ten to twelve years, most of the industry has focused on glyphosate-resistant crops. Some of these new herbicides fit well into helping manage for glyphosate resistance, which is becoming an issue in many places. The site includes current topics, interactive herbicide efficacy tables and links to UNL publications like Extension Circulars and NebGuides. Lowell believes that the resources on that website will help producers more easily make decisions about what herbicide to use, as well as when and how to apply it.
