Montana breeder elected to National Simmental BoardMontana Jim Butcher, Lewistown, Mont., has been elected to a three-year term on the 16-member Board of Trustees of the American Simmental Association. Jim Butcher, a partner in Gateway Simmental and a former president of the Montana Simmental Association, is involved in producing and marketing Simmental-influenced seed stock including "Lucky Cross" hybrids. Gateway Simmental located north of Lewistown, is a third generation ranch that established Simmental in 1968, when Jim's father, the late Emmet Butcher, introduced the breed. Gateway calves out 850 to 900 cows annually and backgrounds bulls and females in their own small feedlot located on the ranch. The farming operation, which involves approximately 3,500 acres of wheat and barley and 1,000 acres of hay, including 800 irrigated acres, provides most of the feed for herd maintenance. Butcher and his wife, Lynn, are the parents of four children: Logan, 17; Austin, 14; Brockton, 12; and Gracia, 9. Butcher was formally seated at ASA's 41st Annual Meeting held Jan. 31, in Fort Worth, Texas. Also seated were re-elected incumbents, Bill McDonald, Blacksburg, Va.; John Harker, Hope, Ind.; Gregg Bailey, Mt. Vernon, Mo.; Mike Mallett, Lampasas, Texas; and newly elected Roger Finke, Berthold, N.D. The American Simmental Association is headquartered in Bozeman, Mont., and maintains the breed registries for the Simmental and Simbrah breeds of cattle. ASA has an active adult and junior membership of nearly 8,000.
