Kansas Farmers Union recognizes outstanding contributions during annual convention

Kansas

The Kansas Farmers Union recognized outstanding contributions to the organization and family farms at its annual convention held Jan. 9 and 10 in Hutchinson.

Herb Bartel, Hillsboro, was named the Farmers Union County President of the Year for his outstanding leadership on behalf of agriculture and for his dedicated efforts in membership recruitment. Bartel is president of the Marion County Farmers Union. He has been an active supporter of Kansas Farmers Union efforts at the state and local level and has led Marion County members in supporting those efforts.

Receiving the award for Farmers Union County Agent of the Year was Ron Buddenhagen of the Labette County Farmers Union. Buddenhagen operates a Farmers Union Insurance Agency in Parsons. He was cited for his support of the Labette County Farmers Union activities and his efforts in membership recruitment, in which he signed up the most memberships with farm insurance in the state.

Special recognition was given to Dr. Daryll E. Ray and Rex and Lynn Childs.

Ray, director and founder of the Agricultural Policy Analysis Center at the University of Tennessee, received the prestigious Ruth Hirsh Award. The award was presented in recognition of Ray's outstanding dedication and service to agriculture and America's family farmers and ranchers. During his career, Ray has spent over 40 years studying markets and developing agricultural models for evaluating the impact of agriculture and environmental policy changes on agriculture. He has done several agricultural economic studies for Farmers Union. Presented in memory of long-time Kansas Farmers Union activist and educator Ruth Hirsch, the prestigious award is given annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to agriculture and/or the efforts of the Farmers Union.

Rex and Lynn Childs received the Meritorious Service to Agriculture Award for their outstanding dedication and leadership in service to Farmers Union and agriculture. Rex Childs is a well-known radio broadcaster who, for more than 30 years, kept Kansans informed of agricultural issues and news through his programs on KFDI radio station in Wichita. He has had a long association with the Kansas Farmers Union, participating in a number of its activities, and has often served as a moderator or presenter on the convention agenda. Lynn Childs shared in the award in recognition of the support she has provided for his work.
