K-State Leadership Seminar to be April 2

A certified life and leadership coach and popular Kansas State University professors will be the featured speakers at the 2009 K-State Leadership Seminar.

The topic for the one-day seminar--"Resilient Leadership: Learning to Thrive in Times of Change"--promises tips for weathering change successfully, a Kansas State University spokesperson said.

The seminar will be held April 2 at the K-State Student Union in Manhattan, said Robert Wilson, chairperson of the seminar planning committee.

In choosing resilience as the theme for the 2009 professional development offering, Wilson said the sessions will focus on building the skills to work through change, yet also learning to recognize opportunities associated with change; understanding conflicts that arise during change and the effects of a changing culture in the larger world.

Featured speakers for the plenary session of the seminar include:

--Julia Fabris McBride, a certified life and leadership coach and keynote speaker: "Presence, Space and Courage: Three Doorways to Resilient Leadership."

--Richard Baker, associate professor in the Department of Communications and news director of the K-State Radio Network at Kansas State University: "Change: What You Don't Know ..."

Michael Wesch, who will be featured as the luncheon speaker, is a cultural anthropologist and assistant professor in K-State's Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work. He has chosen "Invisible Leadership: Because Nobody is as Smart as Everybody" as his topic.

The cost to attend the professional development seminar (from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) is $55, which includes registration, a conference packet, buffet lunch and refreshment breaks.

New to the seminar this year will be two optional afternoon breakout sessions and professional development opportunities:

--"Resilient Leadership: Managing Self While Leading Change," presented by Julia Fabris McBride; and

--"Leading Change at Every Level," an assessment of personal leadership behaviors.

The cost to attend the breakout sessions ($20) covers the cost of both sessions; space is limited, and registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The K-State Leadership Seminar is typically popular and early registration is recommended. For registration and more information, go to www.k-state.edu/leadershipseminar or call the Kansas State University Division of Continuing Education during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Monday through Friday: 785-532-5569. Deadline for registration is March 20.

The 2009 Leadership Seminar is the 13th in a series of professional development opportunities planned to address timely topics in leadership and facilitated by a volunteer committee drawn from the campus and community. A complete list of sponsors, who help to make the seminar affordable, is included on the Web site and in the conference packet.
