64th Annual Cleveland County Jr. Livestock Show
It's that time of year again--time for livestock shows. Both 4-H and FFA members have been working hard all winter to reach the point of the county livestock show to exhibit their prized animal. This year the show will take place March 3 to 6 at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds.
A livestock show is an event where the youth of this county are able to exhibit their show projects to a judge who places the animals by meat or breeding quality standards. Four species of livestock which will be exhibited at the county stock show are the traditional cattle, swine, sheep, and meat goats.
4-H youth involved with this program will range in age from 9 to 19 years of age and will represent every community within the county. FFA students will range from freshmen to seniors. These kids come from both the urban and rural parts of the county and all walks of life.
What can I expect to see at the show? Of course, you will see lots of animals being lead around and exhibited, but it's the behind the scenes activities that make the program what it is. If you look down any isle at the show barn you will see kids having fun working together as a team to get their animals to the point to where they look their best.
Shows are a competition and the winners do receive prizes. Show participants receive awards based on their placing in class and in the show overall. After the show is completed late March 6 there is a bonus auction for the animals that place at the top of their species. At the bonus auction premiums are provided by local donors to the youth so that they can continue their show projects the next year.
This 4-H/FFA livestock program has been a part of Cleveland County for 64 years and continues to help develop the youth of Cleveland County. During the week of March 3 to 6, the tradition of showing will continue with the Cleveland County Junior Livestock Show. All are welcome to come and visit the spring show free of charge, and visit with the 150 youth that will be exhibiting their 300 projects and see for yourself what kind of impact show projects have on youth and what impact the 4-H and FFA youth have on the county.
