New Mexico's winning wines

New Mexico

New Mexico's Department of Agriculture is proud to join in the recognition recently afforded to Southwest Wines of Deming, New Mexico.

Southwest Wines' 2007 DH Lescombes Cabernet Franc Limited Release was honored at the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition as one of only six wines given a Best of the Best Sweepstakes Award. The Cabernet Franc Limited Release won in the "Red Sweepstakes" category, making Southwest Wines the first New Mexico winery to win this coveted award.

"The Lescombes family and Southwest Wines have demonstrated the potential and capability of New Mexico wine growers to create outstanding wines," said Dr. I. Miley Gonzalez, New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture. He added, "We are proud of our state's wine growers."

Southwest Wines' winning wines were hand selected out of 4,765 wines entered and received 15 medals overall, including the two gold medals for the 2007 DH Lescombes Mounverde Limited Release and the NV St. Claire Port.

Much like the judgment in Paris, France, in the 70s, when California wines were first honored at an international tasting, this competition has drawn attention to the excellence of the wines being produced in New Mexico.

Wine enthusiasts throughout the country may obtain the winning wine at the winery in Deming, and it will be available this summer at fine restaurants throughout the United States.
