PIERRE, S.D. (AP)--The number of animal rabies cases in South Dakota fell in 2008 for the fifth year in a row.
The state Health Department said the 24 cases were the fewest in nearly 50 years, and down from 27 in 2007.
The positives tests came from 679 animals tested and included rabid 16 skunks, four bats, two cattle and two horses. All but four of them came from east of the Missouri River.
The last human case of rabies was reported in the state in 1970.
