Berglund to receive NSA award

The National Sunflower Association will be honoring Dr. Duane Berglund, former NDSU Extension Specialist with its highest honor the Gold Award. The award is presented to individuals who have contributed extra-ordinarily to the overall sunflower industry. Dr. Berglund was a newly appointed NDSU agronomist when sunflower was introduced to the Upper Midwest in the middle 1970s. He adopted the crop and became a key resource for new growers throughout the region speaking at hundreds of meetings.

Berglund is editor of Sunflower Production Bulletin 25 published in 1996 and 2006. This publication is known as 'The Sunflower Bible' by farmers and members of the sunflower industry. He also compiled and published sunflower yield data from North and South Dakota. He was an early advocate of sunflower planter calibration studies, including the planting of sunflower in narrow rows with air seeders.

Larry Kleingartner, NSA executive director, says that "Duane was always ready to speak at meetings, take on a new project and be a resource person for federal agencies such as the EPA and RMA." Despite his retirement Duane continues to coordinate the annual sunflower crop survey which includes the area from Manitoba to Texas.

The award presentation will be made at the annual NSA Summer Seminar which will be held at the Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria MN on June 24. Details of the meeting can be found at www.sunflowernsa.com.
