AdvertisementSiebert receives Mary M. Hopkins Volunteer Service AwardCarcass Show Chairman Gale Siebert was named the 2009 Mary M. Hopkins Service Award winner by the Beef Empire Days Board of Directors. Siebert was awarded this honor in appreciation of his 20 years of volunteer service in the community and promoting the beef industry. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in agricultural education and began teaching at Garden City High School, Garden City, Kan. In 1969, Siebert became involved in Beef Empire Days. Three years later, he started his career of 29 years at Garden City Community College teaching general agriculture, livestock production and coaching the livestock judging team. In addition, Siebert started a meat science program at GCCC. Siebert began coaching the meat judging team as enrollment grew in the meat science program. This opened the doors to hosting a meat judging contest in Garden City. He hosted and organized the Beef Empire Days Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest for more than 20 years. In 1989, Siebert began volunteering as the carcass show co-chairman for Beef Empire Days. After retiring from GCCC in 1999, he continued his carcass data collection service. The service was started in 1992 as a college project involving students who collected data for producers in the five plants in southwest Kansas. Siebert is very proud of his former students who have earned successful careers in the meat science industry. He recently retired as the owner of Seibert Carcass Data Service and plans to spend more time taking his restored 1935 Twin City tractor to shows, playing the banjo and guitar with House Blend Band and spending more time with his eight grandchildren. Mary M. Hopkins was the first Secretary-Treasurer of the Beef Empire Days organization upon incorporation in 1974. She became a life-time director of the Beef Empire Days, Inc., Board of Directors in 1991. She was involved in each and every Beef Empire Days celebration from 1969 through 2002. The Board of Directors created an award in 2003 in her name to recognize an outstanding community volunteer. Beef Empire Days sponsors have been given the opportunity to nominate outstanding volunteers and the Board of Directors selects the award winner from the nominations. Nomination guidelines include: volunteering in the community, a history of beef industry promotion of at least 10 years and involvement in a minimum of three different beef industry capacities. Beef industry capacities may include the Beef Empire Days, Inc., Board of Directors or volunteer committees, Southwest Kansas CattleWomen, Kansas CattleWomen, Kansas Livestock Association, breed associations or any other livestock industry related organization.
