Texas wheat production down 32 percent from last year

The 2009 Texas winter wheat crop is forecast at 64.8 million bushels, down 35 percent from last year and down 54 percent from 2007. This estimate is unchanged from the May forecast.
According to a June 1 survey conducted by the Texas Field Office, statewide yield is expected to average 27 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from last year and unchanged from the May forecast. Harvested acreage, at 2.4 million acres, is down 27 percent from the 2008 crop but unchanged from May.
Production on the Northern High Plains is forecast at 38.0 million bushels, up 6 percent from last year. Winter wheat production on the Blacklands is forecast at 9.9 million bushels, down 40 percent from last year. The Low Plains production is estimated at 7.2 million bushels, down 74 percent from last year. Production on the Southern High Plains is forecast at 4.8 million bushels, 41 percent less than the 2008 crop.
United States winter wheat production for 2009 is forecast at 1.49 billion bushels, a decrease of 20 percent from last year and down less than 1 percent from the May forecast. Yield is expected to average 43.9 bushels per acre, down 3.3 bushels from a year ago and down 0.3 bushel from the last forecast. Acreage to be harvested for grain is expected to total 34.0 million acres, unchanged from May.
