Kansas winter wheat production expected down 4 percent

The 2009 Kansas wheat crop is forecast at 340.0 million bushels as of June 1, unchanged from the May 1 forecast, but down 4 percent from the 2008 crop. The current crop is projected to be harvested from 8.5 million acres, down 400,000 acres from a year ago. Yield per harvested acre is expected to average 40 bushels, equal to the May forecast and the 2008 final yield.
As of May 31, wheat condition was rated 7 percent excellent, 39 percent good, 34 percent fair, 12 percent poor, and 8 percent very poor. Conditions had declined during the month of May due to increasing disease pressure and less favorable soil moisture conditions. Crop progress was behind the 5-year average during May, and by May 31, wheat turning, at 10 percent, lagged behind the 5-year average of 39 percent.
Temperatures were mild most of the month and then started to warm up the last week of May. The state received widespread rainfall the first two weeks of May. Precipitation also fell on the western half of the state the last week of the month with some areas receiving up to 4 inches. Statewide, topsoil moisture supplies declined from 99 percent adequate to surplus to 76 percent during the month.
