Destination ImagiNation honors Dairy Farmers Of America board chairman

Dairy Farmers of America Inc., Board Chairman Tom Camerlo was recently honored for his long-term commitment to Destination ImagiNation, a youth program that builds skills in creative and critical thinking, teamwork, time management and problem solving. During the organization's 2009 Global Finals tournament at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, the Board of Trustees presented the inaugural Camerlo Award trophy to its namesake.

One of Destination ImagiNation's highest awards, the Camerlo Award is given by the Board of Trustees to an individual who has continuously committed countless hours and donated extraordinary re sources to Destination ImagiNation because of the faith he or she has in the importance of the program.

"Tom's commitment to children, education and creative problem solving are unparalleled," said Brownie Mitchell, chair of the Destination ImagiNation Board. "He is passionate that today's children need to develop strong minds as well as healthy bodies. Tom has been instrumental in the program's growth and success."

Destination ImagiNation is an innovative organization that teaches creativity, teamwork and problem solving to students across the United States and in more than 30 countries. Its main program is an unconventional team learning experience where student teams all over the world solve mind-bending challenges. Teams are tested to think on their feet, work as a team, and devise original solutions that satisfy challenges requirements.

Camerlo has served Destination ImagiNation as a parent of a program participant, a team manager and a tournament volunteer. He also introduced Destination ImagiNation to health and nutrition programs including 3-A-Day of Dairy, the NFL's Fuel Up To Play Student Ambassador Program, and Children's Nutritional and Fitness Initiative.

Behind the scenes, Camerlo was a founding member of the Destination ImagiNation Community Advisory Board, worked as a community champion for program fundraising, and has acted as a liaison to Washington, D.C., legislative and development activities. He and the National Dairy Council have been signature sponsors of Destination ImagiNation since its inception in 1999.

Camerlo has been the owner of Camerlo Dairy since 1963 and chairman of DFA's Board of Directors since 2003. He also is a member of DFA's Executive Committee. He is a member of the board for Dairy Management Inc., and the Western Dairy Farmers Promotion Association. He chairs the U.S. Dairy Export Council and was reappointed by the Secretary of Agriculture and the U.S. Trade Ambassador to the Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee for Trade. Named Colorado Livestock Producer of the Year in 1994 and World Dairy Expo Dairyman of the Year in 2003, he also was inducted into the Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2001.
