Iowa State animal scientist presented distinguished service award

Iowa

Maynard Hogberg, chair of Iowa State University's animal science department, has been presented a distinguished service award by the National Pedigreed Livestock Council.

The award was in recognition of Hogberg's contributions to the livestock industry. It was presented at the organization's annual meeting May 4 to 6 in Kansas City.

Hogberg earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural education in 1966, a master's degree in animal science in 1972 and a doctorate degree in animal nutrition in 1976, all from Iowa State. He joined the faculty in animal husbandry at Michigan State University in 1976 where he had responsibilities in swine extension, teaching and research. In 1984, he was appointed chair of Michigan State's Department of Animal Science, a position he held for 18 years.

He was appointed professor and chair of animal science at Iowa State in 2003.

Hogberg has been active in industry organizations such as the National Pork Producers Council, National Pork Board, National Swine Registry and National Swine Improvement Federation. Hogberg was involved in the formation of the National Swine Registry, and serves as chair of its Genetic Advisory Committee. In 2003, he facilitated a program for the National Pork Board to determine research and extension priorities for the swine industry, and serves on its animal science research committee.

The National Pedigreed Livestock Council is an organization of executive officers of the nonprofit breed associations of dairy, horse and pony, sheep, goat, swine and beef species.
