Hays to host Wild West Festival July 2 to 5

Kansas

Join us for the Wild West Festival in Hays, Kan., July 2 through 5. The festival in its 15th year has something for everyone, organizers say.

Beginning July 2 and continuing throughout the weekend there will be a baseball tournament, special exhibits at the Hays Arts Council, the Ellis County Historical Society and Sternberg Museum. Shopping at the Mall and in Downtown Hays will offer fun activities as well as special bargains. Don't forget all the fun at the Hays Aquatic Park. The festival grounds will be the site for The Heart of America Carnival and concerts from national recording artists.

On July 2 the festival grounds will open at 5 p.m., with the opening act Jared Daniels Band performing at 6:30 p.m., followed by a special guest, Lance Combs at 8 p.m., after which you will enjoy Tracy Lawrence at 9:30 p.m. Lawrence is one of the premier voices of his generation, a sensitive and intelligent singer who continues to stretch both as an artist and as a person. Lawrence's dedication to honesty and his respect for tradition have enabled him to build one of the most respected careers in recent country history. Some of his hits include "Sticks and Stones," "Alibis," "Can't Break It To My Heart," "My Second Home" and "If The Good Die Young."

Start the day July 3 by taking part in the Ellis County Ministerial Alliance Swingin' Golf Tournament at Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course with proceeds to benefit the 2nd Mile Fund. The festival grounds open at 5 p.m., with the opening act Revelry performing at 6:30 p.m., followed by a special guest, LoCash Cowboys at 8 p.m., and finishing the evening with a performance by The Lost Trailers at 9:30 p.m. The Lost Trailers are a band that came together naturally, matured creatively, perform explosively and have poured all of that into "Holler Back" their new album. Some of their hits include "Holler Back," "How Bout You Don't," "Call Me Crazy" and "Why Me?"

On July 4 you can take part in Fort Hays State University's Wild West Festival 5K Run/Walk beginning across from the Hays Aquatic Park at 8 a.m., or try the Hays Medical Center for Health Improvement's Wild West Workout beginning at Larks Park at 8:30 a.m. The "American Spirit" parade down Main Street begins at 10 a.m., with a cutest cowboys and cowgirls contest immediately following the parade in Union Pacific Park in downtown Hays. Then join the group at The Hays Aquatic Park for Wild West Festival Kids Games beginning at noon.

The festival grounds open at 5 p.m., with opening act The Moody Hooters performing at 6 p.m., followed by the special guest Jimmy Dee and The Fabulous Destinations at 7:30 p.m., and finishing the evening with Tommy James and The Shondells performing at 9:30 p.m. The music of Tommy James is played continuously, everyday in every country in the world and has been for more than a generation. His songs are so ingrained in modern culture it's difficult to go for more than a day or so without hearing one of them on the radio, TV, or a film soundtrack. To date, Tommy's sold more than 100 million records and has been awarded 23 gold singles, and nine gold and platinum albums. Some of his hits include "Mony, Mony," "Crimson & Clover," "Crystal Blue Persuasion" and "Hanky Panky."
