HPJ Associate Editor named to Class X of KARL

The Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership board of directors has announced its selection of Class X of the statewide program. High Plains Journal Associate Editor Jennifer M. Latzke is one of 30 class members who will participate in a two-year program of leadership study, training and travel.

KARL Class X (2009-2011) gathered at the Rolling Hills Zoo Conference Center, west of Salina, as a prelude to its two-year educational experience for emerging leaders in agriculture and rural communities.

Class X members will actually begin their two-year training experience this fall, said president and program director Jack Lindquist. Members will participate in nine in-state seminars. A special national seminar, called Blue Chip, will review a Fortune 500 corporation's strategic management processes. They'll tour the halls of federal government in Washington, D.C., in a one-week seminar, and wrap up their training in 2011 with an international study tour of Vietnam.

Vietnam is a rapidly growing trading partner for the United States, Lindquist explained.

"Forming our tenth class has been a milestone for KARL. A team of rural Kansas leaders organized KARL 20 years ago this month," he said. "Through the years, however, we've found the education, motivation and experiences that come from within each group of 25- to 53-year-old members will be as important as the curriculum. Class X, for example, represents a wide range of sectors and both small community and urban viewpoints."

Members of the program are selected from across the state. In addition to Latzke, KARL Class X includes: Shawn Alloway, Edna; Amos Alstrom, Marysville; Ty Brookover, Garden City; Adrian Coberly, Gove; Becky Cooper, Gypsum; Linda Craghead, Alma; Jeff Grier, Wichita; Mitchell Hall, Anthony; Stephen Hendrickson, Waterville; Christy Hopkins, Tribune; Clint Hornberger, Baldwin City; Mark Jirak, Atchison; J.J. Jones, Topeka; George Kreidler III, Rosalia; Jesse McCurry, Wichita; Steven Miles, Lawrence; Dana Nanninga, Garden City; Damon New, Tonganoxie; Justin Ohlde, Linn; Alisa Rath, St. Francis; Lance Russell, Hays; Benjamin Siegfried, Holcomb; Jarred Sterling, Ottawa; Brian Taylor, Kinsley; Bill Unterseher, Almena; Sandra Utter, Pratt; Jennifer Wilson, Manhattan; Matt Wolters, Atwood; Jeff Zortman, Fowler.

High Plains Journal Editor Holly Martin is an alumnus of the KARL program. She is a member of Class VII, which visited Costa Rica and Mexico on its international study tour.

The KARL training experience carries a value of nearly $17,000 per person, Lindquist said. Yet, KARL, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit organization (a 501c3, charitable, educational organization). Its sole funding is private donations.

"More than 80 percent of the program's budget comes from individuals, organizations, companies, corporations and foundations interested in helping provide first-class leadership development for the state's agricultural and rural stakeholders," Lindquist said. "To cover the remaining costs, participants raise or pay a tuition fee of $1,500 on their own for each of their two years of training."

Those wishing to support the program can make tax-deductible contributions directly to KARL at 101 Umberger Hall, KSU, Manhattan, KS, 66506. That office space is an in-kind donation from Kansas State University Research and Extension.
