AdvertisementCattlemen's bills signed by Gov. RitterColorado The Colorado Cattlemen's Association applauded two bills signed by Gov. Bill Ritter June 2. There were five bills signed to help protect and conserve Colorado's water and land. SB 158 (Isgar/Baumgardner) was a bill that the Colorado Cattlemen's Association worked very hard to see become law in Colorado. This bill protects landowner confidentiality regarding information collected by the Department of Natural Resources on private lands. The association was immensely successful with this bill; it had passed completely through both houses and is now signed into law. This bill mandates that any information collected on private lands related to a specific landowner and their specific parcel of land shall be exempt from the public records act. This piece of legislation is designed to further landowner cooperation with the Department of Natural Resource's programs. Another huge success for cattlemen was the signing of HB 1317 (Pace/McKinley). This bill was a huge success in passing both houses, and gained the support of the Governor of Colorado. This bill deals with the state of Colorado's refusal to sell or lease state lands in the Pinon Canyon maneuver site to the federal government for Department of Defense purposes. The Cattlemen's Association provided testimony to support the efforts of keeping the Pinon Canyon lands for agriculture, schools, and private ranches. "The Army's work in Southern Colorado is vital to our national security interests and to Colorado's economic security interests," Gov. Ritter said. "At the same time, private-property owners, farmers and ranchers are equally vital to Colorado's future." Advertisement
