2009 Colorado Wheat Field Days set for June 8 to 17

Colorado

The 2009 Colorado Wheat Field Days will be held June 8 to 17 at 10 different variety trial sites throughout eastern Colorado. The field days are jointly hosted by the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee, Colorado Association of Wheat Growers, Colorado Wheat Research Foundation and Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and Agricultural Experiment Station.

Richard Starkebaum, CWAC vice president from Haxtun, explains why wheat producers should attend: "Wheat field days give the growers an excellent opportunity to observe the new high quality and higher yielding wheat varieties that are being developed through the CSU wheat breeding program. They will be able to compare these varieties side by side with other breeding programs and decide which best fit into their own wheat programs. Buyers, both domestic and international, are starting to realize that Colorado is now raising high quality wheat and are no longer discounting Colorado wheat. You, as Colorado wheat producers, should be proud that the increased funding for research supported by the recent referendum is starting to show results. Please attend the field day that is close to you and observe first hand the value of these varieties to your operation."

The field days will highlight new hard red and hard white varieties developed by CSU and other breeding programs in the Great Plains region. Attention will also be given to special areas of emphasis in wheat breeding at CSU and progress and plans with CWAC funding for CSU wheat research.

Dr. Scott Haley, CSU wheat breeder, said, "Colorado wheat field days are the best opportunity that producers have to see a wide range of available varieties side-by-side in the field to make their own comparisons of which varieties they think will fit on their farms. Visiting the variety trials in their local area also helps producers put the trial results in context after harvest. Wheat producers should always consider planting more than one variety just to spread their risks."

This year's wheat field day program will involve plot tours at ten trial locations that will each last about 45 minutes. The highly successful Wheat Planting Decision Meetings will be held again after harvest of the 2009 crop and before planting of the 2010 crop. All field day locations will feature refreshments or a meal.

CSU Extension Agronomist Jerry Johnson will review trial conditions and results from the 2008 testing program and highlight critical areas of emphasis related to agronomic production management. CSU Wheat Breeder Dr. Scott Haley will show and discuss new and exciting wheat varieties and various areas of emphasis in wheat breeding and genetics. Varieties discussed will include several popular varieties from CSU (Hatcher, Ripper, Bond CL, Bill Brown, and the new hard white Clearfield variety Thunder CL), Agripro (Hawken, Jagalene, NuDakota, and TAM 111), Westbred (Keota, Smoky Hill, Winterhawk), Watley Seed (TAM 112), and other public programs in the region (Fuller, Camelot, Infinity CL, Settler CL, Mace, Overland, OK Rising, and Duster). Wheat varieties for irrigated producers will also be discussed.

All wheat producers are urged to attend at least one of the Colorado Wheat Field Days. For more information, a schedule and a map, visit www.coloradowheat.org or call 1-800-WHEAT-10.
