Summer courses, scholarships offered for teacher coursesKansas
Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom will again offer graduate-level summer courses through Kansas State University in 2009. KFAC summer graduate courses are designed to re-energize Kansas educators and introduce them to delivery methods and resource materials which can be used to incorporate agriculture into the curriculum. From investigating a flower's reproduction system to exploring the science behind a dairy farm, KFAC courses open up the door to the many exciting opportunities agriculture can provide to an educator. Scholarships provided by agriculture donors are available, which make these exceptional resources an affordable option for all Kansas educators. Two courses are offered through KFAC's partnership with the Kansas State University graduate program: Connecting Your Classroom to Kansas Agriculture (3 credit hours) and Horticulture and School Gardens (3 credit hours). Connecting Your Classroom to Kansas Agriculture is a week-long hands-on experience that assists teachers in integrating agriculture into all classroom subjects while, at the same time, aligning lessons with state curricular standards. Educators will participate in creating techniques that will allow their students to investigate the scientific process, practice daily observations, take data measurements and analyze results using agricultural examples. This course is offered in Manhattan, Kan., June 8 to 12 and in Kansas City, MO., July 20 to 24. Horticulture and School Gardens introduces teachers to the possibility of mastering a school garden. From soil science to experiential and sensory learning, this course offers information for teachable moments involved with growing a garden. Experts in the horticulture field will enable educators to create an excitement about growing plants with students. This course is offered in Wichita, Kan., June 15 to 19 and in Olathe, Kan., July 13 to 17. All KFAC courses are offered through Kansas State University Continuing Education, the College of Education and the College of Agriculture, and participants earn Kansas State University graduate credit. Each course is approved for continuing education hours required of teachers for license renewal and salary advancement.
