New brucellosis testing to begin May 22 in MontanaHELENA, Mont. (AP)--New testing requirements for brucellosis in livestock near Yellowstone National Park will begin May 22. The state's plan will affect cattle ranchers in Beaverhead, Carbon, Gallatin, Madison, Park, Stillwater and Sweet Grass counties. Those producers will be required to complete a survey to help assess the risk of brucellosis, which can cause pregnant animals to miscarry. Lower risk producers may be exempted from some testing requirements. Without a risk survey, the plan will require testing of all cattle that go to market, are sold to another producer, are moved to a county outside the targeted area, as well as require a whole herd to be brucellosis tested before the end of the year. The only known source of brucellosis comes from the national park's bison and from free-ranging elk in the Greater Yellowstone Area.
