K-State honors Outstanding Alumni and Service award recipients
Kansas State University's Department of Grain Science and Industry honored recipients of its Outstanding Alumni and Service awards at its first annual awards luncheon April 23. The luncheon was held at the department's International Grains Program Executive Conference Center in Manhattan.
The Outstanding Alumni Award was for significant positive impact on or contribution to the field of grain science and representing the values and mission of the department on behalf of K-State's alumni, faculty, staff and students. Recipients included:
--Ron Kruse of Western Milling, LLC, because of his successful career in the feed manufacturing and biofuels industry and his leadership gift for the construction of the new O.H. Kruse Feed Mill and Biorefinery Teaching and Research facility;
--Dan Wells, because of his contribution to the milling industry and most recently to teaching students in Grain Science and his recruitment efforts;
--Dale Eustace, Professor Emeritus of Grain Science and Industry, for more than 30 years as a teaching faculty member in the Department of Grain Science and Industry;
--Steve Curran, General Mills, for his contributions to the milling industry and on-going dedication to the Department of Grain Science through as a former faculty member and supporting the department as a member of the North American Millers Association's (NAMA) Advisory Board;
--Theresa Cogswell, Bakers National Education Foundation, for her contributions to the baking industry and her dedication to the department through recruitment, scholarship support, and as a member of the Grain Science Advisory Board; and
--Royal Denning, Cereal Food Processors Inc., for contributions to the milling industry and his support of the department as a member of the Grain Science Advisory Board and scholarship support through the International Millers Education Foundation.
The Outstanding Service Award, was for support and contributions to the department through improving facilities, providing equipment, recruitment of superior students, enhancing department visibility and reputation, recognizing faculty expertise, endowing programs that attract outstanding faculty and students, providing technical support in research programs, and expanding department outreach activities or other justified support activity. Recipients included:
--Betsy Faga, North American Millers Association, for her dedication to the department through NAMA, which helps advise our milling program and provides scholarship support to students, and as a member of the Grain Science Advisory Board;
--Dan Cain, for his contributions and service in making the Bioprocessing and Industrial Value-Added Program (BIVAP) a successful venture;
--Chuck Walker, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Grain Science and Industry, for his dedication and on-going service to the department even through retirement;
--Brian Davis, Quaker Oats, for promotion and recruitment of students for the department and for his contributions to the Bakery Science Program with donation of ingredients; and
--Richard Hahn, Emeritus Department Head of the Department of Grain Science and Industry, for his many years of service to the department and for coming out of retirement to lead us once again during an Interim period between department heads.
