Producers compensated for livestock losses

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.--South Dakota Sen. John Thune says the Farm Service Agency is taking applications to partially compensate producers for livestock losses related to blizzards, floods, heat and other adverse weather.

The Livestock Indemnity Program is part of the 2008 Farm Bill and provides 75 percent of the fair market value for livestock losses.

Producers should contact their local FSA office for eligibility requirements and application procedures.

Thune says producers must file a notice of loss with the FSA by Sept. 13 for any livestock losses since Jan. 1, 2008. Livestock deaths from now through the end of 2009 must be submitted within 30 days.
