Maquoketa team, 2008 Beef Scholarship Extravaganza ChampionsIowa The fourteenth annual Iowa Cattlemen's Foundation Beef Scholarship Extravaganza was held Dec. 13, at Iowa State University in Ames. "The Beef Scholarship Extravaganza allows students to experience the different aspects and knowledge needed to be successful in the beef business," said Will Frazee, beef producer from Emerson and vice president of the Iowa Cattlemen's Foundation. "The Iowa Cattlemen's Foundation is proud to host an event that encourages students who someday will emerge as industry leaders. After observing these talented young people, we are confident the future will be in good hands." Teams from across Iowa and Nebraska entered the challenging beef management contest. This unique competition focused on students knowledge and skills in beef production management. Teams worked through ten stations that covered a broad range of beef cattle management practices including marketing, nutrition, beef quality, seedstock merchandising, credit and finance, and industry issues. The Maquoketa FFA team of Jake Kilburg, Montana Deppe and Tim Johnson, all of Andrew, took champion honors. Land O'Lakes Feed sponsored a $1,000 scholarship for each of the three members of the Maquoketa team. Maquoketa FFA advisor is Gary Burns. The reserve champion team honors went to the Denison-Burger Kings. Team members were Derek Ketelsen and John Schneller of Denison and Lukas Sievertsen of Manilla. Randall Kuhlman is the Denison FFA advisor. Farm Credit Services of America sponsored the reserve champion team scholarships. Farm Credit Services also sponsored the third place team scholarship won by La Porte City-Dysart FFA. La Porte City-Dysart advisor is Louis Beck. Team members included Josh Dunkelberger and Matt Ollendieck of La Porte City and Steven Mc Garvey of Buckingham. Wayne FFA took the fourth place team honors. Team members included Kiley Everman and Zach Bingham of Allerton and Branygon Kunzie of Corydon. Fred Wilker is the advisor for Wayne FFA. The fourth place team scholarship was sponsored by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council. The Maquoketa FFA team of Brian Steffen, Cody Foust and Isacc Sutton of Maquoketa took fifth place honors. The team was awarded a scholarship sponsored by Allflex USA. Farm Credit Services of America sponsored plaques for the high school teams achieving the highest point total in each of the ten stations of the contest. Teams recognized for this accomplishment include: --Job Interview Station--La Porte City-Dysart FFA --Industry Issues Station--La Porte City-Dysart FFA --Reproduction Station--Maquoketa FFA #2 --Credit & Finance Station--Wayne FFA --Beef Management Challenge Station--La Porte City-Dysart FFA --Handling & Health Station--Denison--Burger Kings --Nutrition Station--Wayne FFA --Seedstock Merchandising Station--La Porte City-Dysart FFA --Keep Cull Replacement Heifers Station--Maquoketa FFA #2 --Marketing Station--Denison--Burger Kings Iowa State University hosted the event at Kildee Hall and the Farm Bureau Pavilion. The Iowa State Beef Teaching farm brought cattle for the Seedstock Merchandising, Marketing, Nutrition, Keep-Cull Heifers and Beef Quality and Cattle Health stations.
