Herefords are heading to Denver

Plan now to attend the Hereford activities scheduled during the 2009 National Western Stock Show in Denver, Jan. 14 to 17. The week will be filled with cattle shows, recognitions and fellowship.

The event will kick off with the junior Hereford show at 2 p.m., Jan. 14. The pen of three female show will be at 9 a.m. Jan. 15. Followed by the bull pen and carload show starting at approximately 11 a.m. The National Hereford Female Show will begin at 8 a.m. Jan. 16. Hereford events will wrap up Jan. 17 with the National Hereford Bull Show starting at 8:30 a.m.

If you can't make the trip to Denver, you can find Hereford show results at Hereford.org. The "Shows" menu on the left includes "National Show Results."

The Mile High Night National Hereford Sale will begin at 6 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Beef Palace Auction Arena on the Hill. This year's offering includes 42 lots--17 bulls, 10 females, seven embryo packages, six pick of calf crop/females, three flushes and four pregnant recipients. This elite selection of Hereford genetics is consigned by 36 Hereford operations from both the U.S. and Canada.

Lot 1 of the sale will be the Foundation Heifer donated by Grandview CMR. All proceeds from the heifer will go to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America $5 million capital endowment campaign. The heifer, Grandview CMR Super Lady 8021ET, is a Jan. 13, 2008, daughter of Remitall Super Duty 42S.

The auction will be online at LiveAuctions.tv. For more information about the sale, contact Eddie Sims, National Cattle Services Inc., at 580-595-1626 or Joe Rickabaugh, American Hereford Association director of field management and seedstock marketing, at 816-842-3757 or jrick@hereford.org.

On Jan. 15, the National Organization of Poll-ettes is hosting a social at the Renaissance Denver Hotel, followed by the group's annual meeting. Also throughout the week, 10 young women will be competing for the honor of being the National Polled Hereford

Queen. Representatives of the NOP will announce the winner prior to the selection of the grand champion bull. This year's queen candidates are: Jessica Acheson, Woodbine, Kan.; Lauren Anderson, Manchester, Tenn.; Denelle Billman, Newcomerstown, Ohio; Arika Bohnsack, Taylor Ridge, Ill.; Kirbie Day, Waxahachie, Texas; Cameron Kolinski, Patrick Springs, Va.; Maddie Moore, Cove, Ore.; Hillary Peters, Centralia, Wash.; Mary Porter, Jesup, Ga.; and Tayton Stolee, Argyle, Wis.

Also at Denver this year will be the honoring of the American Hereford Association's Industry Innovator Award winners. The winners of these three awards were chosen by the AHA Board and will be recognized on Jan. 15 during the carload and pen show.

The headquarters hotel for the event is the Renaissance Denver Hotel at 3801 Quebec St. Reservations can be made by calling 888-238-6752 or 303-399-7500. Be sure to call by Dec. 15 and ask for the "American Hereford Association room block" to receive a discount rate. This hotel does offer a free shuttle to and from the Denver International Airport and to the NWSS complex.

NWSS attendees will again have a chance to meet with other Hereford producers in the Hereford hospitality suite in the Yards. Sponsored by Hereford breeders, the suite this year will be in a new location on the first floor of the Exchange building. It will be a great place for breeders to discuss business transactions or just visit with old friends. The suite will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Jan. 14, through Jan. 16, and 8 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 17.
