Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska and western North and South Dakota auctions for the week ending Jan. 17, totaled 7,100 head, compared to 8,725 head last week and 7,200 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week at Wyoming auctions, feeder steers and heifers under 700 pounds sold steady to $3 higher, over 700 pounds were steady to $2 lower, except heifers in Riverton were $2 to $3 higher. Demand was moderate to good. Direct trading was slow this week. Demand was light to moderate. Comparable steer and heifers sales were $1 to $2 lower. Buyer inquiry was light to moderate for light to moderate offerings. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent, and with a 5 to 10 cent slide on calves and 3 to 6 cent slide on yearlings from base weight. Steers made up approximately 59% of the total receipts, heifers 41%, with 43% over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 1470 head of the total receipts.
