West Plains regional cattle sales report

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 5,000 head Jan. 20, compared to 6,385 head last week and 1,214 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers under 650 pounds were steady to $2 lower, over 650 pounds were $3 to $5 lower, full decline on heavier yearlings. Heifers under 650 pounds sold steady to $2 higher, with most 450- to 650-pound English blacks $3 to $5 higher for most of the day. Weights over 650 pounds were $2 to $4 lower with full decline on weights over 750 pounds. The supply was heavy. Demand was moderate to good, but seemingly receipts quickly outnumbered orders once the futures market settled and any cattle that weren't pretty much top-shelf, were notably lower with lighter demand causing a wider than normal price spread. Heavier yearlings were pressured not only from a depressed fat cattle market, but mainly because cattle feeders can no longer get them gone on the more attractive April board. The supply consisted of 53% steers and 47% heifers, with nearly 50% weighed over 600 pounds.
