SDSGA leadership meets with legislators across state

The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association Executive Committee hosted several open house events to visit with legislators across the state about the cattle industry and the upcoming legislative session.

According to SDSGA Executive Director Margaret Nachtigall, Rapid City, S.D., the Stockgrowers hosted legislators in Rapid City on Dec. 29, 2008, then in Aberdeen and Waverly on Jan. 8, and Brandon the following day.

"We always enjoy the chance to visit with legislators from all areas of South Dakota. We appreciate them taking the time away from their day-to-day schedules to meet with us and learn about the issues affecting the cattle industry," said Nachtigall.

Nachtigall said another highlight of the trip was a tour of the Mack Brothers Feedlot near Waverly, S.D. "It was interesting to see their unique feedlot facilities and learn the details about how and what the cattle are fed. As cow-calf producers, we have a keen interest in the feeding sector of our industry and appreciated the Mack family for showing us around," said Nachtigall.

SDSGA President Larry Nelson, Buffalo, S.D., was also pleased with the outcome of the meetings. "I feel fortunate to live in this state where our state lawmakers are regular people--just like me--who seem to have a genuine interest in South Dakotans," said Nelson. "We had good back-and-forth discussions with the legislators about the cattle industry, and also about issues of concern to them. We look forward to working with each of them during session."
