Colorado agriculture showcased in annual photo contest
From fresh cut hay to cattle grazing in a mountain meadow, the winning pictures from the eleventh annual "Colorado...It's Agricultural" Photography Contest showcase the spirit of Colorado agriculture.
"The competition was tough, and the judges noted the increased quality of the entries this year," said Wendy White, marketing specialist at the Colorado Department of Agriculture. "It is always so exciting to see how photographers capture the diversity of agriculture in Colorado."
The winners were selected from more than 110 entries based on relation to Colorado agriculture, creativity and technical quality.
The grand-prize winner and recipient of a Kodak digital camera is Dee Jensen of Fleming, Colo., with her entry entitled "Checkin' the Edge." The winning photograph is a black and white image of hard working hands at branding time.
Other top finishers include Katrin Anderson, Paonia, Colo., first place in the agritourism category with "Majestic Red;" Anne Crewdson, Westcliffe, Colo., first place crops with "Makin' Hay;" and Molly Witzel, Burlington, Colo., first place livestock with "Rocky Mountain Grazing."
Other individuals receiving an honorable mention are Tracy Bye, Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Christe Feldmann, Silver Cliff, Colo.; Sandie Hansen, Pagosa Springs, Colo.; Ben Hewes, Sterling, Colo.; Robert Hirko, Fort Collins, Colo.; Sue Hodgson, Brush, Colo.; Tanya Ishikawa, Federal Heights, Colo.; Pat Martin, Grand Junction, Colo.; Marni Mattner, Denver, Colo.; Tayler McKee, Bayfield, Colo.; Mary Anne Nelson, Durango, Colo.; Jessi Neuberg, Arvada, Colo.; Linda Pampinella, Bayfield, Colo.; Gary Rich, Aurora, Colo.; Kent Sather, Monte Vista, Colo.; and Joy Wooten, Kim, Colo.
Winning photographs will be displayed in the Beede-Hamil Agriculture Building at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. They are also available online at www.coloradoagriculture.com.
The 2009 contest is now underway. Photographers can enter their pictures through Dec. 31, in four categories: agritourism, crops, livestock and people. Started in 1998, the "Colorado...It's Agricultural" Photography Contest is sponsored by the AgInsights Committee, Kodak, Colorado Department of Agriculture and Northeastern Junior College.
