Boswell named to chair agriculture subcommittee on general farm commodities, risk managment

Will also serve on Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry

Jan. 15, Congressman Leonard Boswell was named as Chairman of the Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management for the 111th Congress. Boswell will also serve on the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry, which he chaired in the 110th Congress.

"Producers face a challenging period of increased volatility in commodity prices," said Boswell. "I look forward to ensuring that producers have risk management tools that truly work, while guaranteeing that consumers have a safe and affordable food supply."

"These are challenging times, and the subcommittee will continue to examine derivatives markets, particularly credit default swaps, and the role they played in our current credit crisis," added Boswell. "By bringing a greater level of transparency and accountability to our markets, we can help stabilize our financial and agricultural economies."

The General Farm Commodities and Risk Management Subcommittee has jurisdiction over programs and markets relating to cotton, cottonseed, wheat, feed grains, soybeans, oilseeds, rice, dry beans, peas and lentils. Its jurisdiction also includes oversight of the Commodity Credit Corporation, crop insurance, and commodity exchanges, including the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
