WESTI Ag Days' research-based information addresses numerous topicsWyoming Attracting ag labor, soil moisture monitoring, crop nutrient research and controlling salt cedar and Russian olive trees are among numerous topics at Wyoming Extension's Strategically and Technologically Informative (WESTI) Ag Days Feb. 3 to 4 in Worland. Sponsored by the Big Horn Basin Ag Ambassadors, WESTI's theme is Partners in Agriculture. Sessions are at the Worland Community Center Complex at 1200 Culbertson Ave. Registration begins each morning at 8:30 a.m. Lunch is provided each day. "WESTI provides a series of concurrent sessions throughout the two days covering a variety of research-based topics for farmers, ranchers and those living on a few acres," said Jim Gill, UW CES Northwest Area educator in Worland. Additional presentations include estimating costs of operating machinery, utilizing electric fences for rotational grazing, preparing for the unexpected, growing top-notch corn silage, ranching and farming with joint pain, cow management and subsequent calf health, creative energies and more. Don Day with DayWeather Inc. in Cheyenne is the featured speaker at the Big Horn Basin Ag Ambassadors ag appreciation dinner in conjunction with WESTI Ag Days. The banquet starts at 6:30 p.m., Feb. 3, at the Worland Community Center Complex. The Washakie County CowBelles will serve dinner. The 2008 Big Horn Basin Ag Citizen of the Year will also be announced. Producers are asked to call the Washakie County UW CES office at 307-347-3431 to reserve tickets. "The banquet has become an annual tradition and one of the social highlights of the year for farm and ranch families," noted Gill. Second-day sessions cover a variety of areas speaking to ranching and farming with joint pain, putting livestock genetic tools to work, crop nutrient research, corn silage production and key brucellosis issues. "In addition," said Gill, "the MillerCoors folks are partnering to present key malt barley production issues."
