Wellness program helps make healthy difference in Bexar County
Want to make a healthy difference in Bexar County? The Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Bexar County is offering a Master Wellness Volunteer Program for those wanting to help others live more healthful lives.
"The program is a 40-hour training done over a series of daylong classes which provide participants with health and nutrition education," said Dr. Connie Sheppard, AgriLife Extension agent for family and consumer sciences.
Volunteers agree to give 40 hours of community service in return, she said.
The program's six trainings will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The training dates will be March 31, April 17, April 21, May 1, May 8 and May 22. All training sessions will be held at the AgriLife Extension office in Bexar County, 3355 Cherry Ridge Drive in northwest San Antonio.
The program will cover nutrition and dietary guidelines, food safety, food preparation demonstrations, healthy lifestyle choices and children's health, Sheppard said.
Previous program volunteers have included homemakers, community leaders, high school and college students, workplace volunteer program participants and human resource managers, Sheppard said.
Volunteer activities include giving presentations, assisting under-served families with food shopping and preparation, participating in health fairs, establishing a Healthy Texans program in the workplace, and assisting with Better Living for Texans and Walk Across Texas health and wellness programs, she noted.
"Finding reliable sources of health and wellness information can be a challenge," Sheppard said. "AgriLife Extension is an educational outreach agency of the Texas A&M System and has provided Texans with guidance on food and nutrition for more than a century."
Sheppard said a certification exam on the final day ensures the volunteers have the tools and knowledge they need to impart health and nutrition information to others in the community. Participants will receive a binder with copies of all program presentations.
Program registration is $50 to cover the cost of materials. The registration deadline is March 10. To register, call 210-467-6575 or go to the AgriLife Extension Web site for Bexar County, http://bexar-tx.tamu.edu .
