Texas wine-grape growers to cluster togetherTexas Texas AgriLife Extension Service will sponsor the 17th annual Gulf Coast Grape Growers' Field Day on Feb. 6 in Cat Spring, about 75 miles west of Houston. The field day will be held at the Cat Spring Agriculture Society Hall, located at 13035 Hall Rd. It will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., with activities taking place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. "We hold this field day annually to inform and benefit both the novice and experienced grower," said Fritz Westover, Gulf Coast regional viticulture associate for AgriLife Extension in Harris County. Topics will include the nature of soils and achieving the right nutrient balance; understanding grape capacity and yields; grape berry moth monitoring and new vineyard research. There also will be presentation on the history of Gulf Coast wine-grape production and an industry update by the Texas Wine Grape Growers Association. The field day provides an opportunity for growers to hear the results of the latest wine-grape research from AgriLife Extension and Texas AgriLife Research experts of the Texas A&M System and other universities, Westover said. This year's speakers represent Texas A&M, Texas Tech and the University of Houston. A minimum of three continuing education units will be available to licensed pesticide applicators.
