State council proposes new environmental ideasDES MOINES, Iowa (AP)--A state advisory council's recommendations to cut pollution and curb greenhouse gasses could face particular resistance in a tight budget year. The state's Climate Change Advisory Council on Jan. 2 released 56 recommendations to the Legislature that included investment in nuclear power and participation in a pollution cap-and-trade system. The total bill for the recommendations came to an estimated $4.8 billion during the next decade, and that's what Gov. Chet Culver and Republican and Democratic lawmakers say is keeping the recommendations from getting serious consideration in the upcoming session. The recommendations focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation and agriculture. 2/2/09 Date: 1/28/09
