Santa Fe County Extension hosts annual fruit growers workshopNew Mexico New Mexico fruit growers will meet at the annual Fruit Growers Workshop Feb. 18, at the Santa Fe County Extension complex, 3229 Rodeo Road. Registration will be at 8 a.m., with the welcome and opening remarks at 8:30 a.m., by Ed Costanza, president of the New Mexico Apple Council. The event is sponsored by New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service, New Mexico Apple Council and the New Mexico Department of Agriculture marketing division. "Along with some of our state's own experts, we are fortunate to be able to bring in a couple of out-of-state speakers," said Patrick Torres, Santa Fe County Extension agricultural agent. Two of the speakers will be Todd Edwards, who will address some of our calcium deficiency dilemmas and Robert Evans, who will provide us with some latest information related to frost protection, Torres said. Edwards is an agronomist with Albion Plant Nutrition in Clearfield, Utah, while Evans is with USDA Agriculture Research Service in Sydney, Mont. Other presentations will be pruning and training of fruit trees, to be presented by Richard Heerema, NMSU Extension Plant Science specialist; insect pest update and their management using the latest integrated pest management practices by Carol Sutherland, NMDA entomologist; and apple marketing report by Craig Mapel, NMDA marketing and development division.
