Grape production course leads producers through entire growing seasonMissouri A course for current and potential grape growers will take participants through the entire growing season in seven classes running February through October. Instruction will range from site selection in February to harvest in September and production budgets in October, said Andy Allen, University of Missouri Extension viticulturist with the Institute for Continental Climate Viticulture and Enology. The course will introduce fundamental grape-production principles. "Emphasis is on commercial production, but it is open to anyone interested in growing grapes," he said. "At each class meeting we will cover topics relevant to that time of the growing season. We will spend two or three hours on lectures and then go to the fields. The time in the fields is important to demonstrate the principles we discuss during the lecture portion," he said. Classes will take place at the Bistro at Les Bourgeois Winery and Vineyards in Rocheport, Mo., from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Classes meet Feb. 26, April 9, May 7, June 4, July 9, Sept. 10 and Oct. 22. Enrollment is limited to 70 participants. The nonrefundable registration fee is $300 for Missouri residents and $400 for out-of-state participants. Deadline for registration is Feb. 20.
