New Texas AgriLife Extension Service horticulturist named for Tom Green County

Texas

Allison Watkins has been named the new Texas AgriLife Extension Service horticulturist for Tom Green County effective Feb. 1.

The announcement was made by Tom Green County Judge Mike Brown and Scott Durham, AgriLife Extension administrator at San Angelo.

"It has taken us a while to find the right person for this key position, but we feel we have done so by hiring Allison," Durham said. "She has the youth, energy and can-do spirit that this job will require. We feel she will do a wonderful job in continuing the legacy left by John Begnaud who retired January 2008, and who made this position one of the most visible and respected in the state."

Watkins is a December 2008 summa cum laude horticultural graduate from Tarleton State University in Stephenville. She also earned an associate of science degree from Western Wyoming Community College, Rock Springs, Wyo.

As a student worker at Tarleton, she worked in the university's horticulture center on landscaping and landscaping maintenance, and general greenhouse operations. She later managed the center.

Watkins also served as an intern for the AgriLife Extension office in Tarrant County where she coordinated and taught more than 500 Junior Master Gardeners, assisted with 4-H judging contests, diagnosed horticultural problems and helped with the garden program at the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center.

Her academic honors and activities include memberships in the Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Chi Honor Societies, being named to Tarleton's "A" Honor Roll, and serving as president of the Tarleton Horticulture Club.

For more information, contact Durham at 325-653-4576.
