National Western attendance down 4.5 percent

DENVER (AP)--Attendance at the National Western Stock Show fell slightly this year.

The show had 643,100 visitors over 16 days before closing Jan. 25. That's a 4.5 percent drop from last year but it's the 12th straight year that attendance has topped the 600,000 mark.

President and CEO Pat Grant said it was a good turnout given the weak economy. He said attendance during the first six days of the 103rd annual show was down about 10 percent but then picked up.

Grant said cattle prices were down "a little bit," echoing the overall cattle market. Final sales figures will be available in a few weeks.

Grand champions at the Junior Livestock Auction fetched prices that in some cases were less than half the prices paid last year.
